Review: The Homing Pigeon by Sid Bahari

Hello There,
How have you guys been, I haven't blogged for a while :( , Last week has been Crazy, though I have read some awesome books this month but couldn't Post the reviews .. Apologies. Well No worries, Here I am with a remarkably exalting book by a Debut Author Sid Bahari.

Title: The Homing Pigeons
Author: Sid Bahari

Pages: 328 paperback
Publisher: Srishti Publishers
Genre: Adult Fiction
Release: April 10th 2013
Buy the Book : Infibeam / Flipkart
Source : review copy via The readers Cosmos

In the middle of the catastrophic 2008 recession, Aditya, a jobless, penniless man meets an attractive stranger in a bar. Little does he know that his life will change forever.

When Radhika, a young, rich widow, marries off her stepdaughter, little does she know that the freedom she has yearned for is not exactly how she had envisioned it.

They say homing pigeons always come back to their mate, no matter where you leave them on the face of this earth. The Homing Pigeons is the story of love between these two unsuspecting characters as it is of lust, greed, separations, prejudices and crumbling spines.
MeThinks:

Book Cover:
First of all, I absolutely digg the cover, Love the color scheme, it is appeasing and soothing. And fonts is just taking it to the next level, certainly making it The Homing Pigeons of many readers.

Story Writing and characters:
"The brain hates ambiguity. I think if the brain was a man, he would be an accountant. He'd want the assets and liabilities to be equal."~ page 40
This is one of those stories where you don't know from where to start or how to write the review because you are afraid about telling too much and spoiling the surprise element for the readers. When I opened it and read few pages, I was appalled, Oh I can not describe that feeling, it was confusing as hell, I couldn't decide whether to just go with with the flow and stop being judgmental or shake Aditya so that he come back to his senses. Oh by the way Aditya is the Male protagonist and I am still deciding how much to tell you guys about him because I really want you (whoever is gonna read it) readers to jump into the book without knowing much about what you are gonna get and have the same experience-- From shocking to transfixing to WOAH! moments!! And this story is not just of Aditya but of Radhika as well. Both grown up in different towns, under different circumstances, now living completely different lives yet connected with a delicate but strong string of LOVE, Unbreakable by even the cruelest of times.

This story is about how circumstances makes you do things you never dreamt of and it is yet justifiable as every step you take is an array of all other steps you have taken or forced upon in your life. It is about being perfect by being imperfect. Well it is about finding your desire and following it no matter how twisted it may seem to others.

The story is written alternatively from Aditya's and Radhika's point of views, every chapter of one character ending with suspense-kinda where I kept anticipating What-happened-or-what-will-happen-next, but there .. next page opens with the other character then I have to wait a whole chapter to know the NEXT-OF-PREVIOUS-CHAPTER and the current chapter ends the same way and it kept building.. AGH!!How much really liked it!!(I hope you are getting what I am trying to say). It kept jumping from past to present keeping me engaged the whole time, never breaking the pace.
"A strong backbone differentiates humans from jellybeans" ~ page 318
Author Sid has created a piece where his made his characters grow, not only as a book character but as real person with their dreams, their regrets, their pasts and present trapped in a single Prism always at the verge of colliding with each and reflecting many Pretty and awing colors. It was almost like the author took the challenge of firstly making readers almost dislike both protagonist then making the same readers feel empathetic towards them, then getting lost in their pains and sorrows and when they(readers) emerge, they are actually in sync with those protagonist. With is indeed an ambitious task in itself.

I know I am not talking about the summary of the story.. So I am gonna do that but vaguely. Here, the story starts with Aditya's POV where Aditya finds himself in a difficult situation where he was forced to make a choice by a rather Rich and pretty lady Divya. He did make a choice most of us won't approve of but that one-time-choice doesn't just end there but took a jet-ride.  BTW he is married at that time :p.

Then there is Radhika, whose first introductory impression is not so great as well, she is no saint, but there are so many layers that made her into what she is today. She used to be a pretty brilliant girl, still is, but life has always been cruel to her and she has faced it with head on, without breaking. And she has done pretty commendable things like educating unprivileged children so yup, I correct myself here, she seemed like a modern Saint to me.
Aditya and Radhika have been in love with each other since their school days but being shy and all.. couldn't confess their true feelings.. Life gave them another chance but took it away making a cruel cosmic quip.. then.. well I am not gonna tell you everything!! My blog is spoiler free, so sorry guys :) :) Will they finally meet??? And the ending is "a new beginning"...

BTW I loved how Aditya proposed Radhika when fate made them cross each others path again and how she replied. *Wink wink* The side characters like Divya, Aditya's wife, Radhika's daughter, Her parents, Aditya's mother all had an equal share of story making it more appealing.

Verdict: Aditya is the surprise element of this book. If someone would have told me about him being what he is then I probably would not have picked it but I am so thankful to The readers Cosmos for giving me this wonderful opportunity of reading this remarkably exalting, utterly transfixing roller coaster of emotions. As I mentioned before, It kept me engaged the whole time, never breaking the pace, kept me anticipating the past and future of the protagonists at the same time. Wonderful read Indeed. I have read it in spite of a huge time crunch, this book is that good. :)

Review: The Wordkeepers by Jash Sen

Title: The Wordkeepers
Author: Jash Sen
Series: The Wordkeepers trilogy
Pages: 262 pages
Publisher: Duckbill books and Westland ltd
Genre: Young Adult Fantasy/ Mythology
Release: January 15th 2013
Buy the Book Amazon / Infibeam
Source : review copy via Publishers (Westland ltd.)

"The wordkeeper was taken; abducted right under my nose. That left my final hope, the new wordkeeper."

Anya’s carefree teenage life is thrown into turmoil when her mother is abducted, passing on the mantle of wordkeeper to her. Her only ally for this task is a cursed immortal warrior.
In another part of the country, village boy Bilal dismisses tales about a prophecy claiming he is a messiah … until the day his dearest friend is killed in a case of mistaken identity.

Anya and Bilal need to find each other so they can fufil the old prophecy and destroy their common enemy, the vengeful god who pursues them.

The first of a trilogy, this book takes you on a breathtaking journey of fantasy and adventure, through modern cities, ancient cremation grounds, mythical planets and mystical mountains.
MeThinks:

The Hindu Mythology is so rich and colossal that there is so much of scope to fabricate a story around it and still make it unique. These days it has become a hot topic and its fetching so when such a book hits market, it catches my attention instantly. 'The wordkeepers' is one such book. It is not like another story, it is rather very unique and well researched:)
According to Hindu mythology, there are four Yugs ('epoch' or 'era') and the Author Jash Sen has skillfully connected the three Yugs-- Treta Yug, Dwapar Yug and kalyug, which in itself sounds utterly compelling.

Book Cover:
Isn't cover captivating!!
I really like the book cover. I am giving it THUMPS UP. It looks catchy and befitting with this mysterious big captivating eye with green Iris, And the lashes-- woah!! It draws you into it. That eye is keeping an eye on Anya, Female protagonist as she walks alone in dark nights on a quest to protect... Quite eerie.

Story and Writing:
Prologue takes you five thousand years back, on the war-land of Kurukshetra, Mahabharata, to a dreadful incident where Ashwatthama-- The immortal-- was cursed for eternity by Lord Krishna himself. In Dwapar Yuga.

Book is divided into three parts.
"I, Vibhishan, past Lord of the Sinhala land of Lanka, immortal by the grace of my Lord Ram, and general of the wordkeepers, write the following..." ~page 3, Part 1
Each part starts with a 'note from an immortal' and not just any immortal but Vibhishan of Treta yuga, The brother of Ravana.

Story is set in the year of 2028. Anya, a fourteen years old female protagonist, daughter of busy professionals is confused after receiving a strange note from her mother telling her not to trust anyone, even her dad and follow the trail of clues she has scantily left for her. As she makes a daring escape and finds her way from Bangalore to the fort of Asirgarh, she meets Ashwatthama who guides her along her dangerous life-threatening quest.

The Wordkeepers are the ancient band of protecting clan originally ten in numbers, there job is to safeguard the 10th avatar of Lord Vishnu -- 'Kalki'. But it is not an easy task as 'Kali'-- The Lord of Kalyug (Not Goddess Kali) is dead-set on to annihilate Kalki and thrive for eternity.

Bilal, a Muslim boy who loves cricket, his family & friend, is an important key to the prophecy of saving this world, Kali and his evil doers are hunting for him, Anya has to find him and him being a rebel constantly puts his life in danger.
"The old Anya was dead. Anya the wordkeeper had been born instead." ~ page 180
Can Prince Zohrab and Mahendra Pratap keep Anya and Bilal safe, will Anya and Bilal meet, how are they connected... well I can't tell you all that but what I can tell is that this is an utterly agreeable book for teens and YA readers.

Author Jash Sen has fastidiously crafted the story, keeping it's roots intact to Hindu mythology without spoiling its essence and given it a new modern mix of Facts and fiction. Writing is explicit without complicating things but taking to the fantasy world author has created, it made the whole story spellbinding without breaking its pace.

'You forget that I am gold, Dhoomavati,' replied Kali calmly. 'And all the vices too, he added, nodding towards cigarette stub on the carpet. 'Which is why you worship me more than you know, and I have my power over you just like I do on every other being on earth."page 61

Characters:
I specially liked that Anya is fourteen years old smart and strong young girl, she is fearless and easily adapts with the situation, she is a character every youngster and teenager would want to know about.
There was not much of Bilal in this installment, I want to see how his character grows as the series proceeds.
The Kali-- Lord of Kalyug (Not Goddess Kali)-- in this book seems very real being all conceited, arrogant and corrupt. If he actually existed in real world (Perhaps he does) then the Kali of this book will give a fine glimpse to his personality.
Kokh and Vikokh-- The twines and Kali's followers are another eerie creatures in addition to other shapeshifters.
Other characters like Prince Zohrab, Mahendra Pratap, Goddess Dhoomavati are well known to us but in the book they are mystery to be cracked and it is yet to be seen who is on whose side.
From where I live, the fort of Asirgarh, Burhanpur is not far away, From my Dad I have heard that it believed Ashwatthama still visits the lord Shiva temple at the fort, so I find this particular critical segment of the book interesting and Author has not disappointed in characterizing Ashwatthama as he kept surprising me throughout.

Overall:
Let me just say it again, Book cover is artistic, fun, detailed, eerie, mysterious... and the texture is lil' shimmery like a subtle hologram, I like it very much. It is complementing the story perfectly. This book will surely be enjoyed by Young-adult/Middle-grade readers. The wordkeepers, their genesis, Kalyug myth... Ashwatthama.. a smart female protagonist accompanying a lucid narrative delivered a delightfully engaging read.

Rating this book is a bit confusing... it is between 3.5 to 4 coffee cups depending upon your age. For someone below the age of 18-20, I wouldn't be surprised if they give it 4.5 coffee cups.
My ratings:

Review : Tantra by Adi

Title: Tantra

Pages: 344 pages
Publisher: Apeejay Stya Publishing
Genre: paranormal/ thriller/ Young Adult
Release: April 7th 2013

Apeejay Stya Publishing and Blogadda.com

Anu is a leather wearing, no-nonsense professional guardian with a reputation for killing the most dangerous vampires in New York City. But when her enemies murder the one person she truly cared about, all she wants is vengeance. The only clue points to New Delhi, so Anu puts in for a job transfer.

In India, she finds more than she expected. For one thing, her fellow operatives have made a truce with the vampires. For another, it’s way too hot to wear leather.

At first, it seems Anu’s biggest challenge will be evading the nice boys her aunt wants her to marry. But when children start disappearing, she discovers forces older and darker than anything she’s faced before. All of Delhi is in danger, especially the sexy stranger who sets Anu’s pulse racing.

To prepare for the coming battle, Anu must overcome her personal demons and put aside years of training. This time, her most powerful weapon will come from her mind, not her weapons belt.

MeThinks:
Received signed copy from the publishers!! YAY!! Thanks Adi! :)
Lemme just shoutout first -- "Finally a badass no-nonsense sassy Vampire Slayer female protagonist (with a dirty mouth..Scandalous!) from an Indian Author!! Hell yeah, bring it on!!"

A vampire related story from an Indian author is first but there are gazillions of Vampire stories in the book cosmos, when someone says 'a new vampire novel', I think what new could it bring!? A part of me is always reluctant to start any new series centering around vampires, I have read that many vampire novels, Jaw dropping good once I must add. But since it is the first Vampire novel in India, set in our dear Delhi, there was no way I could resist reading Tantra by Adi. And Adi skillfully manages to bring new spin in the Vampire genre by incorporating Tantra-- India's most spooky practice. Now that's something.

On Book Cover :
I have mixed feelings towards it, I like the color scheme, it's somewhat spooky with lightening and Anu crouched on a roof ready to jump on any vampire involved in any conspicuous activity. Though I did not get the face in the cloudy sky, does that signifies spirits?! or just special effect?

On the story :
"Have you ever seen me wear pink? No, and there is a good reason for that." ~page 112, Anu
Anu Aggarwal, with her stake in hand and leather gear on, she emerges in haunted nights of  Delhi to kick butts and slay vampires, but that's not the reason which dragged her to India from New York, she is on a quest of Brian's killer, her Brian, and she will not rest till she burn that alleged vampire to pieces but no one can know about her motives, her thirst for vengeance.
"This is India. Nothing is ever that simple." ~page 115
On her vigilant jumps from roof to roof in dead of night, Anu encounters a vampire on hunt insinuating towards the purposeful killing of children, where vampire in question is just a pawn to a dangerous operation on prowl.
"Are you serious? Two guardians meet for the first time and you want to talk about my clothes?"--Anu
"What do you want to do? Compare the sizes of our stakes?"-- Amit
~Page 3
Anu and Amit, two guardians of the city -- Not romantically involved -- together unravels the secret behind the killings with the help of Dr. Sharma. Initially she scoffs at the idea of Tantric activities and its affiliation with the killings but having seen the ritual from her own eyes she is set to annihilate the culprit but it is not that simple. Under the guidance of Pandit Grover and Dr, Sharma Anu is trying to unlock the Brahma astra and overcome the alluring maya, meanwhile she is fighting her attraction to a sexy human --Gaurav , trying to dodge the dekhan-dekhi and marriage clutches her aunt is planning on, and haunted by the memories of Brian. The Villain of the story-- Baba Senaka -- the Tantric in disguise is an uncanny creation by the author which led to a spine-chilling stupefying climax with some unexpected revelations.

Characters:
As mentioned, Anu Aggarwal, the female protagonist is strong, fearless and bodacious, is capable of taking care of herself in dark alleys of Delhi at nights. She is witty, sassy and has a quirky charm; she is a Damsel but not in distress. She knows how to use her weapons (pun intended). Her partner or co-guardian Amit is another interesting character with a smart mouth who never fails to crack up the situation with his ingenious remarks
Baba Senaka is one of those Villains who never fails to fright, I find him more real than any other character of the book, he has not only mastered the Tantric astras, playing the dangerous game but is also brimming with over confidence, He is my favourite character from the book.
Gaurav-- Anu's love interest, I rather found him boring and really hoping she opens her eyes and see Chandra-- head of vampires/ Panch-- is a wicked rugged gazillion years old Vampire with a smirk that gets under Aun's skin. He is a Mystery to me and I am looking forward to more of Chandra in the next instalment.
Other side Characters like Baba Senaka's acolytes, Suresh, Karim, Anu's aunty, Anu's cousin, Karta kept the story engaging.

Writing:

What I really liked about this book is the lucid writing, the witty narrative tone, which never fails to make you laugh and kept me on edge anticipating the next scene throughout. It wasn't fancy or forced unlike some other annoying books but natural and more bona fide. The Banters between Anu and Amit or Anu and Chandra are most appealing, though there were a lot less of Anu and Chandra for my taste, I guess Author is saving it for the next instalment.
Author kept the concept of 'Shifting' vague; I wanted to understand that, though at one point he tried to explain it a bit. Every book has its own backdrop of Vampires and their origin, I was disappointed that author did not explain the origin of his vampires (hopefully he saved that for the next instalment), though he did had a theory on why-vampires-are-so-fast-strong-powerful, their workings etc and I found it rather convincing.
The concept of 'Threads' is one of the most intriguing parts along with the explanations of all types of Ratris and their powers, astras, balance and relation between satvvik and tantric activities, maya etc.

The trend of bringing Mythology in modern scenario was started by Rick Riordan when he introduced a modern Greek demigod, since then it has become a hot topic and Adi has utilized the most eerie spooky Tantra concept pretty well which will surely be welcome by the younger generation overseas as well.

Overall Vampires+Tantra+badass-heroine+creepy-scary-Villain results in a fantastic spellbinding world.

Quotes:
"There are no good and evil here, merely connections, relationships and most importantly actions, reactions, consequences." ~ page 142
"You must temper your actions, your karma with dharma, our duty and values. There is no greater sin than to shrink what is your duty. Sometimes your duty takes you places that you do not want to go..." ~ Page 262

0.5 extra cups for the jocular banters b/w Anu and Amit .

Author Profile

Adi grew up reading fiction books by flashlight, hiding under the covers, pretending to be asleep. While it would certainly affect his academic life the next day, he did go on to get degrees from Stanford University and Harvard University, so it was not all that bad.
Somewhere along the line, a poetry book and a minor textbook were published. He wishes he could withdraw all copies of said poetry book from the market. At the time, it was poignant, but now it is just embarrassing.
He’s always given more credit for his successes in life to those late-night reading habits of years ago than to the high-school academics he trudged through, and he yearned to write one of those books himself.
Deeply impressed by the vast religious history of India, he could not help but pick this topic for his first novel.

Review : Words to inspire the winner in YOU by Dr. Roopleen

Title: Words to inspire the winner in YOU
Author: Dr. Roopleen
Pages: 160 paperback
Publisher: Power Publishers
Genre: Motivational
Release: January 2013
Source: Received review copy from Blogadda.com

We all aspire to achieve our goals and fulfill our dreams. But working towards goals is not easy. Enroute to success you will encounter hurdles, obstacles and rough patches. The down times can get really down and dishearten you

Setbacks and disappointments are an integral part of life- there is no escaping them. While you cannot change your circumstances or bypass the hurdles, you can brace yourself up against the difficult times by maintaining a positive frame of mind and being determined to keep going against all odds.

When the going gets tough and you are overwhelmed by the rough times, all you need is something to encourage you and keep you going. Words to inspire the winner in you will do exactly that. This collection of author’s original motivational quotes will lift up your spirits, inspire you and put you back on track.
MeThinks:

Woah !! this one is a hard one to review. It's not a story, nope, nada, but its a collection of quotes.

You know the times when tunnel seems very long, endless, You can't find the opening, can't reach out no matter how long you are walking, no lights to show you the path, nothing to guide you and at some point you almost loose hope, the zeal of keep going, to keep walking, well this book is meant to give you the right push in the right direction, to encourage you during those days.
Everyone faces ups and downs in life and this book can prove to be a good companion during those cloudy days.

The 'Introduction' of this book is a must read. Dr. Roopleen has used her 15 years of experience as a motivational counselor & created a handbook to uplift your spirits when you feel down, when you cannot change your circumstances or bypass the hurdles, this book will help you in bracing yourself to face those difficult times.

This book is mainly a collection of many motivational and enlightening quotes to put you back on track. The right words to inspire, encourage and motivate YOU.
These quotes are categorized under 146 titles like Ability, commitment, confidence, competence, embark, Fate, faith, humility, improvement, obstacles, vision etc. most of the quotes have their own meaning and are significant in their own way.

Where many quotes are quite unique, many are plain and simple. The only problem is its full of Just quotes, I would have appreciated some kind of a story, a back ground or something to read and hold on to. Since every quote had its own beginning and ending, it got slippery at a point creating the monotony, nonetheless, one can pick it and read a random page and yes anyone will be able to connect with it to pull back your frown-lines.

Some quotes from the book--
  • "Don't be afraid of setting high standards for yourself; fear only being contended meeting others' standards that are less than what are capable of achieving. ~ page 18, Achievement
  • "A positive change is the only thing that will enrich you, empower you and help you grow towards a better you." ~ page 32, Change
  • "Fear ends where faith takes over. Doubts end where determination takes over." ~ page 83, Lesson
  • "The secret of success can be summed up as- Purpose, Passion, perseverance." ~ Page 106, Perseverance
  • "If you have dreams, reconnect with them; if you don't dream new dreams." ~ Page 120, Reconnect
  • "Your mind is your only mirror. You are what you think you are. Self-belief is one of the fundamentals of achieving success in life." ~ page 125, Self-belief
  • "Journey of success may seem long and treacherous but the rewards are worth the toil." ~ page 139, Toil
